2030 Agenda: SDG 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities
The National Pedagogical University of Uzbekistan Named after Nizami actively participates in building a sustainable and ecologically responsible urban environment, functioning not only as an educational institution but as a meaningful contributor to the quality of city life. In alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities, the University integrates green infrastructure, energy efficiency, and ecological education into its campus operations and its broader engagement with the city of Tashkent. Through large-scale greening initiatives, renewable energy adoption, systematic infrastructure modernization, and active partnership with municipal and international organizations, the University positions itself as a practical model of a sustainable urban institution.

Mission
To advance sustainable urban development by expanding green infrastructure, adopting energy-efficient and renewable technologies, modernizing campus facilities responsibly, and strengthening ecological awareness among students, staff, and the surrounding community.
Vision
To establish the University as a recognized model of a sustainable, resource efficient, and ecologically responsible urban institution, whose greening, energy, and infrastructure practices serve as a reference point for the city of Tashkent and for other organizations across Uzbekistan.
Priorities
Expand campus green space through participation in the national Yashil Makon (Green Space) project.
Reduce energy consumption and carbon footprint through solar energy and other renewable solutions.
Modernize academic buildings and dormitories, upgrading heating, firesafety, and engineering systems.
Promote ecological awareness and civic responsibility among students and staff.
Strengthen national and international partnerships focused on sustainable urban development.
Expand participation in global climate and environmental programmes, including COP29 and ozone-layer protection initiatives.

Areas of Activity
- Sustainable Campus Development and Green Infrastructure: The University's greening efforts are anchored in the national Yashil Makon (Green Space) project. In 2025, a total of 1,620 tree seedlings were planted on university grounds against a planned target of 1,600, achieving 101% of the plan. This greening initiative directly improves the local ecological situation, reduces summer temperatures, absorbs carbon dioxide, and creates a healthier environment for students, staff, and residents of surrounding neighbourhoods.
- Digital Ecology and Urban Partnership: The University supports the citywide digital ecology agenda through engagement with the “Tree Registry” (Daraxtlar Reyestri) project, implemented by the Zamin Foundation in partnership with the Ministry of Ecology and the Tashkent City Hokimiyat. The platform has catalogued more than 400,000 trees across the capital on green.tashkent.uz. By promoting public awareness of this tool, the University reinforces the municipal effort to use digital monitoring for urban planning, green-space oversight, and tree protection.
- Energy Efficiency and Infrastructure Modernization: The installation and operation of solar panels on campus represents a significant achievement in energy efficiency. In 2025, the system saved 287,281 kWh of electricity, equivalent to 220,119,200 soums in financial terms. This transition to renewable energy reduces both operating costs and the University's carbon footprint. Infrastructure modernization continued in parallel: in 2025, 14 buildings were fully renovated, including 9 academic buildings and 5 dormitories, with heating systems, fire alarm systems, and engineering communications updated throughout.
- Community Partnership and Development of Ecological Culture: In partnership with the Ministry of Ecology and other collaborating organizations, the University regularly organizes scientific and practical conferences, roundtable discussions, and public awareness events on environmental themes, including “Ecological Culture - Today and the Future”, “Ecology and Life,” and commemorative programmes for the International Day of Environmental Knowledge. These forums bring together students, faculty, government representatives, and civil society actors to discuss pressing environmental challenges and develop practical solutions.
- Youth-Led Environmental Campaigns: Ecological education is treated as a systemic process rather than a one-off event. Recurring student-led initiatives include the Environmental Protection Challenge, organized by the University's Youth Union branch, and the regular Ekologik Aksiya environmental actions, extending the University's ecological culture from the classroom into the wider community. Students also compete in international environmental programmes such as “Ozone Layer and Me” deepening their understanding of global ecological issues.
