2030 Agenda: SDG 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production

The National Pedagogical University of Uzbekistan Named after Nizami implements a policy of responsible consumption as an integral part of its institutional culture, embedding the principles of sustainable development into concrete management decisions and everyday campus practices. In alignment with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production, the University addresses ethical procurement, hazardous materials management, campus greening, and sustainability education as interconnected areas of institutional responsibility. The University's systemic commitment to sustainability has also been recognized externally, most notably through its ranking in the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking and its official membership in the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN SDSN), positioning the University as an active contributor to the global sustainable development agenda.

Areas of Activity

Areas of Activity

  • International Recognition and Sustainability Rankings: In the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, established in 2010 by Universitas Indonesia to assess higher education institutions on criteria such as green infrastructure, energy and water management, and waste handling, the University ranked 4th among 41 participating universities in Uzbekistan and 353rd worldwide. The University has also been accepted as an official member of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN SDSN), a global network established by the UN Secretary-General in 2012 that unites more than 1,000 universities, research centers, and scientific institutions worldwide in developing solutions for the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Hazardous Materials Management: The University enforces strict guidelines for the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste generated through academic and scientific activities. The hazardous waste disposal policy is built on five key principles: prioritizing the safety of people and the environment, full compliance with applicable legislation, regular staff training, a commitment to waste minimization, and complete transparency at every stage of hazardous materials management.
  • Ethical and Responsible Procurement: The University adheres to ethical and responsible sourcing principles. When selecting suppliers, priority is given to local and sustainable sources, supporting the regional economy and strengthening ties with the local community. The sourcing policy covers four core directions: local sourcing, animal welfare standards within the food supply chain, diversity and inclusion in supplier selection, and regular training and awareness programmes for staff. This approach minimizes environmental risks and reduces exposure to unethical practices.
  • Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and International Cooperation: Students and staff regularly participate in training on sustainable consumption, environmental responsibility, and ethical conduct in professional settings, so that the University not only upholds the principles of SDG 12 in its own operations but also nurtures future educators who will carry these values forward. This commitment was reinforced through the international conference “Steps Toward Cooperation for a Sustainable Future: STEAM and Education for Sustainable Development” held in partnership with Dankook University (Republic of Korea) under an Official Development Assistance (ODA) program funded by Korea's Ministry of Education and National Research Foundation.
