2030 Agenda: SDG 15 - Life on Land

The National Pedagogical University of Uzbekistan Named after Nizami implements a systemic approach to developing green infrastructure and supporting local biodiversity, treating the ecological improvement of the campus as an integral part of its institutional mission in line with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 15 - Life on Land. The University regards every tree planted and every ecological initiative not as a one-off event but as part of a long-term strategy for building a living, biologically diverse urban ecosystem on campus, reinforced through systematic integration of biodiversity conservation and nature-protection topics into the educational process.

Life on Land

Mission

To develop green campus infrastructure, protect and enrich local biodiversity, and cultivate ecologically responsible thinking among students and staff, integrating environmental stewardship into both the University's physical campus and its educational mission.

Vision

To sustain a living, biologically diverse campus ecosystem recognized both nationally and internationally, and to prepare generations of educators who carry a deep, personal commitment to the protection of life on land into schools and communities across Uzbekistan.

Priorities

Protect and enrich local biodiversity through tree planting and habitat creation.

Sustain and strengthen international recognition for campus ecological performance.

Integrate biodiversity conservation and ecosystem topics into academic curricula.

Organize academic conferences and forums on nature protection and rational resource use.

Extend environmental commitment into surrounding communities and ecologically vulnerable regions.

Prepare future educators to carry environmental values into schools nationwide.

Areas of Activity

Areas of Activity

  • Campus Greening and the “Yashil Makon” Project: Under the national Yashil Makon (Green Space) project, a total of 1,620 tree seedlings were planted on university grounds in 2025 against a planned target of 1,600, achieving 101% of the plan. The plantings include both ornamental and fruit-bearing tree species, enriching campus biodiversity, improving air quality, and creating natural habitats for birds and insects.
  • Faculty-Led Tree Planting and Greening Traditions: Tree-planting has become a recurring feature of university life beyond the annual Yashil Makon marathon. The recurring “Sharing Enlightenment” literary meetings regularly conclude with a joint tree-planting ceremony, linking environmental stewardship with the University's cultural mission. In November 2024, the rector personally took part in planting fruit and ornamental seedlings during the nationwide Green Future marathon in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, while a further 400 ornamental seedlings were planted at the University itself the same day.
  • Community Environmental Stewardship (Hashar): This culture of voluntary environmental stewardship is expressed most visibly through hashar, a traditional communal work practice deeply rooted in Uzbek society. Twice yearly, in spring and late summer, the University joins the nationwide “Obod va Fayzli Mahalla - Yurt Ko'rki” campaign, during which faculty, staff, and students across virtually every faculty clean campus grounds, prune and whitewash trees, and tend flowerbeds.
  • Environmental Education and Curriculum Integration: Questions of environmental protection, rational use of natural resources, and preservation of ecosystems occupy an important place in the University's academic programs. Students study the mechanisms through which natural ecosystems function, the consequences of their destruction, and pathways for their restoration, laying a scientific foundation for ecologically responsible behaviour - a focus of particular significance for a pedagogical university preparing future teachers who will carry environmental values to thousands of pupils nationwide.

Key Achievements

  • 1,620 tree seedlings planted in 2025, reaching 101% of the 1,600 seedling annual target.
  • Campus greening sustained since the project's November 2023 launch, when the first 400+ seedlings were planted.
  • Ranked 4th among Uzbek universities and 353rd worldwide among 1,050 institutions in the UI GreenMetric ranking.
  • 200+ additional seedlings planted at the Faculty of Vocational Education in spring 2024, alongside new flowerbeds at the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
  • 400 further seedlings planted on campus in November 2024, coinciding with the rector's participation in the Karakalpakstan Green Future marathon.
  • Community hashar held in November 2025 in the Okhangaron district, extending environmental stewardship beyond campus.
Key Achievements

Impact

Through sustained, measurable greening and an internationally benchmarked GreenMetric ranking, the University demonstrates a concrete, quantifiable contribution to biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration. By integrating biodiversity conservation into both its physical campus and its curricula, the University nurtures a generation of educators for whom care for the natural world is a deeply held personal value, amplifying its contribution to Sustainable Development Goal 15 across schools and communities nationwide.
